ABOUT THE EVENT

Guggenheim Fellow and 2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist, Maggie Steber, will present works from her long career of documenting wars to photographing her own family.

‘Photography has the great responsibility to document history but has also been labeled as voyeuristic, especially in this era of smartphones. We see people’s lives but what do we really know about them? Where are the surprises? The joys? The heartbreaks? Where is the personal?’ Maggie Steber will take us on a journey where photography becomes an intimate act of documentation, connection and self-discovery.

After the presentation, moderator for the event, Brian Storm, founder and executive director of MediaStorm, will follow up with an interview and a Q&A session with the audience. Light refreshments included.

ABOUT MAGGIE STEBER

Documentary photographer Maggie Steber has worked in 70 countries on stories concerning the human experience. Her honors include a Pulitzer Prize finalist for 2019, Guggenheim Foundation Fellow for 2017-2018, the Leica Medal of Excellence, a Lucie Award in 2019, Overseas Press Club President’s Award 2019, World Press Photo First Prize in Spot News, Medal of Honor for Distinguished Service to Journalism from the University of Missouri, the Alicia Patterson Grant, the Ernst Haas Grant, and a Knight Foundation grant for the New American Newspaper project, a visually-driven tabloid researched and conceived by Steber.

In 2015, Steber was named as one of 11 Women of Vision by National Geographic Magazine. She served as Director of Photography at The Miami Herald from 1999 to 2003 where the photo staff won a Pulitzer Prize and were twice finalists. She was a Newsweek Contract Photographer. Her photographs are included in the Library of Congress, the Guggenheim Foundation Collection, the Richter Collection, and many private collections. Maggie works for various publications, among them National Geographic Magazine, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. Steber teaches workshops around the world and has served as a judge for many grants and organizations including World Press Photo, Pulitzer Prize, the Alexia Grant and the Alicia Patterson Grant. She is a member of VII Photo Agency.

ABOUT BRIAN STORM

Brian Storm is the founder and executive producer of MediaStorm. MediaStorm publishes diverse narratives, offers advanced training seminars and collaborates with a diverse group of clients. MediaStorm’s stories and interactive applications have received numerous honors including two DuPont Awards, four Emmys, and five Online Journalism Awards.

Prior to launching MediaStorm in 2005, Storm spent two years as vice president of News, Multimedia & Assignment Services for Corbis, a digital media agency founded and owned by Bill Gates. From 1995 to 2002, Storm was the first director of multimedia at MSNBC, a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC News.

Storm received his master’s degree in photojournalism in 1995 from the University of Missouri School of Journalism where he ran the New Media Lab and taught Electronic Photojournalism. Storm serves on the Advisory Board for the W. Eugene Smith Fund, the Alexia Foundation for World Peace, the Stan Kalish Picture Editing Workshop, and Pictures of the Year. He is a frequent speaker on the subject of multimedia storytelling.
