ABOUT THE EVENT

‘Too Young to Wed’, examines the deeply troubling practice of early, forced and child marriage as it appears in a variety of cultures around the world today.

The ongoing project began when Sinclair was covering the war in Afghanistan. Sinclair was documenting a story about young girls and women who set themselves on fire when she discovered a disturbing pattern: most of them had been forced into marriage as children.
Horrified to learn that child marriage was common in communities throughout the world, Sinclair has set out to document the practice in the hope of inspiring change.
Too Young To Wed is also a nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect girl’s rights and end child marriage.

ABOUT STEPHANIE SINCLAIR

Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer Stephanie Sinclair is known for gaining unique access to photograph the most sensitive gender and human rights issues around the world. She has documented the defining conflicts of the past decade with a fearless persistence. Although she has covered the dramatic events of war, many of Ms. Sinclair’s most arresting works confront the everyday brutality faced by young girls around the world.

Sinclair has earned numerous global accolades for her Too Young To Wed Project, including three World Press Photo awards, the United Nations (2012, 2014) and the Whitney Biennial (2010) in New York. Other awards for this project include the 2015 Lucie Humanitarian Award, the International Center of Photography 2014 Infinity Award, an unprecedented three Visa D’Or Feature awards from the Visa Pour L’Image photojournalism festival in France, UNICEF’s Photo of the Year, and the Alexia Foundation Professional Grant.

Ms. Sinclair’s other projects have also received a great deal of recognition, including the 2008 CARE International Award for Humanitarian Reportage; The Overseas Press Club’s Olivier Rebbot Award (2009) for her essay A Cutting Tradition: Inside An Indonesian Female Circumcision Celebration; the World Press Photo award for her coverage of the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon; and a Pulitzer Prize (2000) for her work documenting systemic failures in the U.S. airline industry. Ms. Sinclair’s photographs are regularly published worldwide in esteemed outlets such as National Geographic and The New York Times Magazine, among others.

ABOUT LORI BARRA

Lori Barra is the Executive Director of The Isabel Allende Foundation, a private family foundation, whose mission is to support vulnerable women and children by helping finance projects that provide access to reproductive rights, economic independence and freedom from violence and discrimination.

Before coming to the Foundation, Lori worked the previous 25 years as an art director and graphic designer. The early years were spent in magazine design in New York at GEO, American Photographer and various other publications. From l985-87, she worked in Japan, with Eiko Ishioka and upon her return she was art director at Apple, eventually starting her own studio, TonBo designs, which specialized in illustrated books.

When not working or hiking she pursues her own love of photography.
